A trademark protects your brand, name, logo, or slogan, within the specific categories of goods or services you actually offer. That’s where trademark classes come in: they define the scope of your protection, and getting them wrong is one of the most common, and most costly, mistakes founders make when filing.
Trademark classes, formally the Nice Classification, are a standardised system used worldwide to categorise goods and services for trademark registration. Developed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the system gives every country’s trademark office a common structure, 45 classes in total: 34 for goods, and 11 for services. When you file a trademark, you must specify which class or classes your goods or services fall under, and your protection only extends to what you’ve actually filed in.
You can check India’s official trademark register directly, or use the tool above to identify your class first, then read our full guide to trademark registration for the filing process itself.
