The EU Is One Market Built on Twenty-Seven Legal Systems
It helps to be precise about what “EU law” actually means for a business. Some rules are genuinely Union-wide. GDPR sets one data-protection standard across every member state. A single EU trademark through EUIPO protects a brand in all of them at once. Regulations such as the Digital Services Act apply directly without national legislation.
Much of the rest is national. There is no single EU company you can incorporate, no single court that hears your contract disputes, and employment law is set by each member state on top of an EU directive floor. Directives have to be implemented locally, which means the same EU rule can look different in Germany, France, or Ireland.
For the businesses we work with, the practical questions follow from that split. Which member state to base in, how to draft a contract when the parties sit in different countries, how GDPR applies once data moves at scale, and which of the newer digital rules apply to the product. We draft the documents and structures that work across both layers, and coordinate with local counsel in a member state where national-law representation is required.

Prakhar Rai
Prakhar Rai founded My Legal Pal to give founders and businesses structured, commercially grounded legal support rather than reactive, one-off advice. A large part of the firm’s work is cross-border, and questions about the EU come up constantly, usually around GDPR, EU trademark protection, and how a contract should be governed when the parties sit in different member states.
A graduate of La Martiniere College, holding an LL.B and a Master of Business Laws from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, with specialization in Corporate, Banking, Intellectual Property, Finance, and Securities Laws, Prakhar advises founders and companies on the commercial and data questions that come with trading into Europe.
My Legal Pal coordinates with qualified local counsel in the relevant member state where national-law advice or representation is required, while leading the structuring, drafting, and cross-border strategy.

EU Legal Services — Frequently Asked Questions
Partly. Some rules are Union-wide, such as GDPR for data protection and the EU trademark through EUIPO, and regulations like the Digital Services Act apply directly. But there is no single EU company, no single court for contract disputes, and employment and many commercial rules are set by each member state. We work across both the Union-wide layer and national law.
Yes. A single EU trademark registered through the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) protects your brand across all member states in one application, rather than filing country by country. We handle search, filing, and opposition.
GDPR applies wherever you handle the personal data of people in the EU, even from outside it. We draft privacy policies, data processing agreements, and consent frameworks, and advise on lawful bases and international data transfers.
There is no single EU company, so the choice depends on where your team, customers, and tax base sit, and on the company-law and cost differences between member states. We advise on the trade-offs and how freedom of establishment lets you sell across the Union from one base.
Yes. Cross-border contracts turn on the governing-law and jurisdiction clauses, which decide whose law applies and which courts hear a dispute. We draft these carefully so the contract is clear and enforceable across member states.
They may, depending on what your product does. The Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, ePrivacy rules, and the AI Act each target different activities. We help platforms and tech businesses work out which apply and build compliant terms around them.
Yes. Where a matter needs advice on a specific member state’s national law or local representation, we coordinate with qualified local counsel while leading the structuring, drafting, and overall strategy.
