In Lucknow, the first question is who you are writing to.

Lucknow is the state capital, and the state is a large part of its economy. Contractors supply government departments, vendors bill the development authority and the municipal corporation, shopkeepers deal with the electricity department, and plot owners deal with the Lucknow Development Authority. A dispute with a private party starts with a demand letter. A dispute with a government body starts with a statutory notice, and sending the wrong one can cost you months.

We draft both. This page covers what is specific to Lucknow: who the usual respondents are, which forums apply, the disputes we see and the fee. The general rules are in our guides, including the Section 80 CPC notice before suing the government and the service page to send legal notice online.

Who you are writing to decides the notice.

The same unpaid bill is handled differently depending on who owes it.

A private party or a company

A demand letter with a deadline starts the record. For unpaid invoices see our legal notice for non-payment of dues page, and for a dishonoured cheque, where the law fixes the deadlines, see legal notice for cheque bounce.

    A government department

Contractors and vendors who supply state departments, and residents with a grievance against one, need a statutory notice before a suit. The officer who receives it depends on the department, so we confirm that before drafting.

Lucknow Development Authority, Nagar Nigam and other local bodies

Whether such a body is treated as the government for the statutory notice depends on how it is constituted, and many local-authority Acts carry their own notice rule. We check the Act that governs the body, so the notice is not rejected on a technicality.

A grievance against an order or inaction

Where the problem is an order or a refusal to act, not a money claim, the remedy is often a writ petition at the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. A notice to the authority first is the usual practice, and it shows the court you gave the authority a chance to act.

Where the notice leads if the other side does not pay.

Civil and commercial courts at Lucknow

Money claims against Lucknow parties go to the civil courts here, and business-to-business claims of commercial value go to the commercial court. Mediation usually comes first; see pre-suit mediation before a commercial suit.

Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court

The principal seat is at Prayagraj. A bench sits at Lucknow and hears matters from Lucknow and the surrounding Awadh districts, including writ petitions against state bodies.

    UP-RERA

Complaints about delay or defects in a registered real estate project go to the Uttar Pradesh Real Estate Regulatory Authority, which sits in Lucknow, with an appellate tribunal above it.

    Consumer commissions

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission hears the dispute, with the State Commission at Lucknow above it.

    Cheque bounce cases

The complaint follows the payee’s bank branch, so a Lucknow account means a Lucknow court. The notice steps are on our cheque bounce legal notice page.

    Disputes we see in Lucknow.

Five patterns, with the notice that fits each.

Bills unpaid by a public body

Contractors and suppliers wait months for payment on a work order. The work order, the measurement and completion records, the bill and the due date go into a legal notice for non-payment of dues.

    Wholesale and chikan trade

Traders in Aminabad and Chowk, and garment makers who sell on credit to buyers in other cities, often hold only a challan and a ledger. A notice with the ledger statement builds the record. A registered small enterprise has an extra route, explained in our MSME delayed payment legal notice guide.

    Plots, flats and development contracts

Buyers waiting for possession of a flat in a Gomti Nagar project, or plot allottees disputing dues and allotment conditions. The demand is recorded in a legal notice for breach of contract before a complaint goes to UP-RERA or a court.

    Shop and office rent

A landlord in Hazratganj or Aliganj with a tenant in arrears, or a tenant claiming a deposit back. The state tenancy law decides how a tenant can be asked to leave, so the notice is drafted to match it. Arrears are claimed through a legal notice for recovery of money.

    Unpaid salary and professional fees

A small firm that has not paid staff, or a consultant or freelancer whose fees are overdue. See legal notice for unpaid salary.

    What to send us.

The papers depend on who you are writing to.

    A private dispute

Invoices or the agreement, proof of delivery or work done, payment records, messages that admit the debt, and the other party’s full name and address.

A dispute with a public body

The work order or allotment letter, bills and measurement or completion records, earlier letters and replies, and the name and designation of the officer who handled the file.

    A bounced cheque

The cheque, the bank’s return memo and the dates on both.

    A property matter

The allotment or sale papers, payment receipts and any registered document. Photographs help where the dispute is about the state of the property.

Legal notice in Lucknow: questions we are asked

Can you send the notice if the other party is outside Lucknow?
Yes. Speed Post reaches any address in India. Where you can sue then depends on where the other party lives or works, where the cause of action arose and what the contract says.
Should I send a notice or file a writ petition against a state body?
A money claim for bills or dues is a civil claim, so a notice and a suit are the route. A writ petition at the Lucknow Bench suits a challenge to an order or a failure to act. A notice or representation first is usual in both.
What happens if the other side ignores the notice?
You move to the next step: a suit, a cheque complaint, a RERA or consumer complaint, or a writ. A notice does not stop the limitation period, so track the dates. We set out the options in our pre-litigation advisory service.
I received a legal notice from someone in Lucknow. What do I do?
Read the demand and the deadline, collect your records and reply in writing before the date. Our guide on how to reply to a legal notice has a sample reply.
How much does a legal notice cost in Lucknow?
Fixed fees run from ₹2,999 for a standard notice to ₹3,999 for specialist matters, including revisions and dispatch by Speed Post. See send legal notice online for the tiers. We quote within two hours.
